The last pope (now sadly dead) cured a nun of Parkinson's Disease. True story (I saw it on the news).
The cure of a nun has been "officially" passed as a miracle! Yey! The fact that it has been "passed" suggests that their must have been some form of vetting, and that there must have been significant evidence that it was in fact a miracle, not just a short term remission of symptoms.
Now I am not one to be skeptical (I totally am) but I think there is something up here....
for instance The Guardian reported in March 2010 that the (wait for the shock and horror, I can see it creeping into your face) the nun he was meant to have cured was in fact....ILL AGAIN!
OH NO!
So....the pope didn't cure a nun of a disease that is incurable....
Fuck. Sounds like a saint to me!
There was a report of a physician who suggested that the nun was showing Parkinson's like symptoms, but from a disease which could go into sudden remission. Which to me sounds a little like a smoking gun but who am I to judge.
The truly amazing thing about all this, is the ex-pope did the healing shenanigans AFTER HE WAS DEAD. Now that really is a miracle. not just that he cured an incurable disease, he didn't even do the traditional laying hands on the sick (and then having to scrub them thoroughly afterwards I would imagine).
But apparently the current head of the catholic church is happy that this was in fact a true miracle. In my opinion he is just setting the bar low so when he snuffs it he too will become a saint (over his dead body, as it were).
I have to praise the BBC to some degree, as it did point out the fact that a doctor had suggested it might not be Parkinson's (a little skepticism never hurts, except the true believers!).
Now we need to wait for a second mirical to be confirmed and we have ANOTHER saint. So many. Over 10,000 named ones.
They'll be turning up on ebay soon.
Chris
