I'll have my computer on ice please. No, not water ice...helium ice*

(*That's –272 °C, and 2.5 MPa)

Ok so this is really cool (bad put totally intended), researchers at The University of Utah have stored data in the spin in the nuclei of atoms (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/330/6011/1652).

A few downs:

  • They managed to store the data for 112 seconds
  • The computer has to be kept at 3.2 kelvi
  • And at a magnetic field 200,00 times the strength of the earths.

Still...imagine the amout of data you could store in the volume of curent computer drive.

This story has been really well covered elsewhere (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/12/101216142511.htm) so ill leave it at that
